A 747 with drop tanks and double-pod engines

10 AM June 3, 2007

I’ve been watching a lot of Top Gear over the past few weeks. Sitting in the background of some shots is a 747. Cars and planes – fantastic!

In earlier episodes, it has no engines, which isn’t unusual. Turbofans are expensive and full of spare parts, so they’re often removed from decommissioned aircraft. In later episodes, the 747 suddenly sprouted engines – peculiar engines! Take a look at this clip, which has the boys towing all kinds of stuff around the airport, including the big plane.

It turns out that the Top Gear 747 is James Bond’s 747, and also appeared in a VW publicity stunt.

PS: Here’s my map of the Top Gear track, which comes in handy for watching power laps, or figuring out which corner Dumbledore failed to take.
